POS System, POS Terminal

What is a POS system?

A Point Of Sale (POS) system is a combination of integrated hardware that allows the user to store transactional data, process payments, manage inventory & print reports. There are customer databases, department databases, item databases, and supplier databases. System can be networked, messages can be forwarded on, and ideas can be shared. Sales can be viewed throughout the day, by product, by cashier and by hour. Summary sales reports, detailed sales reports and regional sales reports can be printed. Price tags for products can be made, labels for shelves can be printed and purchases can be tracked.

What is a POS terminal?

A POS terminal is a computerized replacement for a cash register. Much more complex than the cash registers of even just a few years ago, the POS system can include the ability to record and track customer orders, process credit and debit cards, connect to other systems in a network, and manage inventory. In the most basic sense, a POS Terminal is a glorified cash register. The most basic POS Terminal consists of a computer, a cash drawer, receipt printer, a monitor, and an input device such as a keyboard or scanner.

However, in addition to being more efficient than cash registers, POS Terminal can create detailed reports that can help you make more informed business decisions. Generally, a POS terminal has as its core a personal computer, which is provided with application-specific programs and I/O devices for the particular environment in which it will serve. The POS terminals have built-in magnetic stripe readers for credit authorizations.

Switching to POS System

At a POS terminal, the name of the member and the current points status can be displayed. Real time points can be updated and redemptions can be done. Individual purchases can be tracked and basic reports can be generated. Barcodes can be scanned and invoices can be generated. Credit card processing and receipt printing is also possible on the same POS terminal.

Switching from a traditional cash register to a computerized POS system can be difficult - there are many factors to consider and some pitfalls to avoid. However the return on investment and benefits to your business can really make it worth your time and effort. POS systems save money, provide productivity gains, and can cut down the amount of time you spend away from the primary focus of your business. Few purchases can have as dramatic an effect on your retail or hospitality business as a point of sale (POS) system. The right POS system will give you a new level of control over your operations, increasing efficiency, boosting profits, and helping you fine-tune your business model.
